The road somewhat less traveled....
Sunday, September 8
We had a lovely dinner in the main square last night in Estella with our new friends (and old bunkmates) from Australia, Cameron and Juanita.
This morning, we had to choose to take a road with a higher climb or a road with more people. We chose to walk with fewer people. The path was in a forest and was very narrow to start with. I didn’t take very many pictures. It was just kind of peaceful. Kind of zen like. Foot pole, foot pole. Repeat.
When we began to really climb, the trail opened up and there were some beautiful views. Then we finished the walk through crop land...we were often walking where the farmers had planted a wind break. The briars and flowers and greenery were a bit overgrown and the path was extremely narrow. We were sure we took the road most people don’t, because otherwise the path would have been more clearly worn.
I just want to say something about walking with poles. They’ve saved me a few times from a good fall. When your foot slips on the some of the loose rocks, the poles are invaluable.
The pictures I am posting below look like it is dirty and dusty and that’s true. The fields are mostly fallow and the ground has been plowed up...big clods of dirt. Not NC dirt...it’s not red clay. It’s just brown. Except for a few sunflower fields and a few crops we don’t recognize, everything is just waiting for spring.
I am also posting a picture of our shoes on the first day and as of last night. Hard to believe they are the same shoes...
Haven’t mentioned the wind. The wind is unbelievable. Yesterday and the day before,
it would often push me around a bit. We both lost our hats a couple of times. And it was chilly. Both of us got a bit of a windburn. But when we are in the sun, the wind feels great. So far, it hasn’t been hot except for maybe a hour a day....
I’ve also posted below a few pictures of odds and ends we have seen that were just out of the ordinary. Below those are some pictures from today.
Summary for the day: 13.3 miles, 1500 feet ascending, 1200 feet descending.... Total mileage to date: 84. Only 401 miles to go.
Some pictures from today’s hike:
Off to Logrono tomorrow.
