The Way of Will James
It has been an honor, privilege and a sacred experience to have Will James along with us. We haven’t posted about him every day, but he’s been with us every day and we’ve left a bit of Will in every town. As you know, Will had 43 girlfriends, give or take, and we’ve tried to honor his girlfriends in about 43 places, give or take.
The journey with Will is one that we don’t take lightly. As we told you early on, we didn’t really know Will, unlike some of our friends, particularly Ann Shepherd and Gail Bernstein. Every evening US time, Ann sends us a picture of Will at some point in his life. Every morning we wake up to a different picture of Will, often with a girlfriend, but sometimes having a difficult day or sometimes hugging or kissing his Mom or Dad. You simply can’t have the essence of this young man traveling with you day after day, without being profoundly moved.
We’ve told a few people about Will but not many, and I am sure some people have seen us distributing Will’s spirit along the way. No one has asked. I am sure they think it is a private moment and for us, it is. However, as we’ve gotten to know Will better through Ann and Gail and the pictures, Will would probably be saying something like “come on over here..it’s pretty...let’s party”. And as Gail told us, he’d want to make sure all the pretty ladies were safe walking over all the rocks.
Thank you Will James....you belong on the Camino. Maybe it is not an accident that this is the Way of St. James and the Way of Will James too.
Tomorrow, Sandra Mascia will take more of Will’s spirit to Finisterre. Finisterre (the end of the earth) was the end of their known world at the time it was named. Betting that Will James proves that it is the beginning, not the end...
